Wat Obama had moeten zeggen...
TOMMY - 23 JUNI 2009... maar McCain daadwerkelijk dééd. Vandaag heeft de Amerikaanse senator John McCain opnieuw president Obama opgeroepen om een hardere houding aan te nemen tegenover de Iraanse machthebbers. De Republikeinen bekritiseren Obama al langer voor zijn slappe antwoord op de Iraanse situatie.
“I think the president can speak out far more strongly and I think he can reassert American values and our commitment to human rights,” zo sprak hij op Fox News. “This is about human rights and values and the oppression of people. We speak out because we think there are universal values that all of us should adhere to".
McCain is van mening dat, hoe de uitkomst van de ontwikkelingen ook zal zijn, het land 'permanent veranderd' zal zijn "...because the people of Iran have spoken out against a government which we now know is even more repressive and brutal then we had first anticipated.”
Eerder vandaag stond McCain stil bij de dood van Neda Agha-Soltan, de jonge vrouw die volkomen onschuldig werd vermoord tijdens protesten in Teheran en die daarmee een symbool van de vrijheidsstrijd werd.
“Mr. President, today I and all of America pays tribute to a brave young woman who was trying to exercise her fundamental human rights and was killed on the streets of Tehran. All Americans are with her.”
